Infant Eczema
is common sight in infants below 5 years of age. However, every now and then there is a case that appears within babies that are 2 to 6 months old. Infants with extra sensitive skin, or even dry skin, are more prone to this disorder. Sometimes, in more severe cases, the outer layer of skin can be lost, or in most cases just becomes more sensitive. This is the protective layer and so you need to be careful with young children who suffer from this condition.

Infant eczema needs continuous extra care as the infants have the habit of scratching, thus irritating the affected area. Stern problems can stem from continuous scratching or picking of the spots, and so every method should be made to try and stop this behaviour. Scratching may break open the skin, making a way for other skin infections to enter the body. Infant eczema needs major care and it should be reported to the doctor as soon as possible.

The main symptoms and signs of this condition are flaked skin, rashes and itchiness. The most effective and the common treatment for the eczema is topical steroid ointment that is prescribed by a doctor as an effective cure against itching and inflammation. These ointments are available in different powers and strengths, and are suitable for short period use, but under medical supervision.

The medical treatment varies with the intensity of the disease and the age of the infant. It is recommended that infants over the age of three months use a steroid free cream regularly to prevent any further development of this disease. Any cure or preventative method should be talked over with a medical professional, and treatments carried out under strict supervision.

Infants are more prone to discontinued sleep and are constantly fussy when skin is irritated. It can be a difficult task to settle a fussing child who is suffering from infant eczema. Mild moisturisers may help ease the itching and calm the irritation, to aid relaxation. Taking precautions is always better than waiting for the disease to appear and be cured.

Using mild and soft baby soaps for cleansing infants is always better than using regular soaps. Give a lukewarm water bath to your infant instead of a hot water bath, as hot water may dry the skin further. Pat the skin dry with a dry towel instead of rubbing it dry in a rough manner. Once they are dried then the clothes the infant is dressed in should be pure cotton. Synthetic fabrics can aggravate the symptoms and so be avoided. Make sure the bedding used for the infant is made of 100% cotton, and woollen or synthetic blankets are not used. Keep the infant’s room temperature normal. Keep the infant away from the extreme hot temperatures. Avoid keeping pets in the house and if you have one avoid the pet getting on the beds and the furniture.

Socks or mittens on the hands can be an effective solution to stop scratching of the skin. Keep the infant’s nails clean and short. Do not apply any kind of talcum powder as it may dry the skin. Keep the skin moist by applying mild moisturizers after their baths and whenever needed.

Strong, harsh detergents can be a bad irritant, and so washing powders and fabric softeners should be carefully selected. Taking conscious steps towards the safety of your infant will definitely help in making his/ her life worry free.
