It is, indeed, quite difficult to define a precise outline of the function and nature of file extensions and the over 40 years in computer hardware and software developments and competing influences of Windows/Dos, Mac and Unix that all have their separate file systems and metadata formats are the basic factor behind it.
Digital Equipment Corporation was the first to implement file extensions during early 1960s. At that time it broke a file system within the base name of the file extensions. After a long time, Microsoft adopted the same convention in its DOS operating system and then in Windows. They expressed the base name and file extension as a single name by separating it with a full stop. It was only a convention to show these pieces of information together. The file extension was stored separately from base name in DOS.
The base name was originally restricted by Microsoft to just eight characters and the extension of the file to a subsequent three characters. The combination of 8 letter name with a 3 letter
file extension was restrictive to some extent and in Windows 95 and in the other coming versions longer filenames were allowed.
UNIX and Mac operating system didn’t use file extensions and they both had their own file systems which had different conventions to store metadata and it used to change over time. In UNIX systems all information are stored in a single whilst while in Mac OSX, the data was stored by using code contained within the file.
However, it is widely accepted that the prevalence of Windows has developed the file extension that is considered the standard method of showing a file’s function .The file extensions are also being used by Mac OSX now.
If Windows fails to open BIN files, it is possible that you may have installed an appropriate program or other registry related error. It is strongly recommended to run a free registry scan for related errors.
BIN file extension or the binary files are related to different functions or programs that mainly denote a binary file output. These files can only be opened if the software that creates them is used. There are also some tricks to find which program generated the software if you don’t find it instantly.
