How much Literacy contributes to a Nation?

They say ignorance is bliss. Not always. Especially when it comes to literacy and what it contributes to a nation. Over the course of civilization, many tools have been used to control the masses, to maintain power and to continue ruling. Literacy too was one of the tools, and continues to remain so even in this day and age. But it is difficult to image any nation ever evolving into something better without its people becoming literate.
The general understanding of the term ‘literacy’ refers to a person’s ability to read and write. However, here we will use this traditional meaning of the term and also include the fact that literacy can be the process of understanding a certain subject despite knowing how to read or write also, such as health literacy through a radio program. A literate person on the other hand could be understood as someone who is enabled; to think independently or to be efficient or a wide variety of things or just live a healthier life
