Default Paid Directory Submission - Does it really work?

Recently I bought a package of Paid directory submission upto 800 Directories .
I thought that it might help me in Search Engine Optimization but it didn't really show me any backlinks .
I bought the package around 10 days ago and now I just found out that my backlinks are only 11 .
I think that was just a waste of money . What do you guys have to say about this?? Was anyone successful in getting good quality of backlinks from such submission?

You should allow Google to crawl that directories to find your link.

Approximately maximum number of days for approval of a link is 3-5 days so almost you will get emails of rejection or approval.

You need to wait no less than three month, if you chose right directories, you will have good traffic, if not...
But, you know, most of well-to-do directories give an opportunity to sites to be listed from 1 till three months at their directories absolutely free. I don't understand why you lost this thing???

Yeap but sometimes you have to wait for 10-15 days too for that.

I think most important when submitting is having a realistic plan for which keywords you are trying to rank better in the title text of the link. I continue to submit and rank medium competitive keywords using directory submission.

For a real example, right now I have a listing that is #2 for "ballroom competitions", and this was done almost exclusively through directory submission. At any given time, I am trying to promote about 10 different sites with their respective keywords.
