I would like to share few tips which can help in promoting your web directory:

1- Use Power of Blogging, create categories in your blog, make frequent posts, and below each post, put the URL of your web directory.

2- Use reciprocal linking methods

3- Use RSS Feeds

4- Use article submissions

5- Buying/Exchanging site wide links or banners with other relevant directories

6- Writing quality content for your web directory

7- Optimize your web directory for Search Engines

8- Keep on doing frequent announcements of your web directory on other Forums, Discussion Boards, Blogs, Social Networking sites etc...

9- Do not accept links of gambling and porn websites in your web directory, because most search engines omit them from their mainstream searches.

10- Sign up for an AdSense campaign (only if your directory has some strength, rich content)

11- Try to buy ad space on other high traffic List of Directories, Directory of Directories e.g. Directory Critic » Directory Lists, Article Directory Lists, Link Building, Directory Templates & Resources , Info Vilesilencer: The Original SEO Friendly Free Directory List buying links/banners on other Directory forums turn into targeted visitors for your directory.

Of course it works, but you must have quality directory in order to give reason for the users to stay on your directory and to submit their sites. Also, this promotional technique is good for the popularity of your brand name in the directories industry.

Totally agree that blog with a directory rocks, but putting a link below each post will seem artificial, instead the link (may be a deep link) in content will look more natural.

Completely agree: But remember, never use the articles for submission purpose that are on your blog or in directory.

That would be Google's politics, but every site directory owner has it's own policy too, we have been promoting the directories in this way for so long, but when it comes to causing harm to Google's revenue (adwards etc...) they started de-valuing the Paid Links I was reading an article on Forbes, there were many other webmasters complaining about natural linking, there are many complications finding difference btw natural links and paid links. For Example: If i place a link to Yahoo's Directory in my all network of 15 Paid Directories under "featured sponsors" so Yahoo's directory will got ban or will loss it's ranking on Search Engines??

Yes that is true, but if each of parent categories in your directory are accommodating with the relevant blogs e.g. Shopping Category containing (on side) Shopping Blog and Posts Under it, so will get the best value.

If you have more points to add in the above mentioned list, keep on adding

I just read between the lines, and that's what I termed it as 'politics', besides that I mentioned, I've no objection!
