Not getting consitent backlinks!

I optimized one of project website and submitted to several directories. Posting to forums was also done.I want to know why different search engines are showing different backlinks???For example: If we take Yahoo it may show 19 links,. Alta Vista 12 MSN 8 links links but Google zero links.Why they are so cruel to my site??Please comment
