How important is the Alexa Rank?

I have recently started a website of my own and it came across to me that a lot of webmasters and tech savvy creatures depend a lot on the Alexa rank to determine its importance. Mine being a new website, I would like to know how to improve my alexa rank and I have also heard things like Alexa ranking only those sites at a higher position that have its bar and hence the other websites, though being good are left out..i wonder if its true…. Can anyone shed some light on this one as well???

Many webmasters don't rely on alexa rank as it is never accurate.
Main factor is alexa toolbar. I heard that placing that would help in improving alexa rank.

Most people will consider it valuable for advertising, Alexa focuses more on the traffic that Web sites receive rather than on links to it. I think Alexa ranking might be the right solution.

alexa is a site which is based on traffic details which means how many ppl visit your site in a day or month so i think u should blog and start posting all you can so ppl can come and visit ur site

Alexa rank isn't important, because it is easy to fake alexa. If you call some friends with Alexa toolbar and ask them to visit your site, you will get realy better Alexa rank.

well first of all alexa is a website of amazon..so it should be important for any website in the world...and it is based on users who have the alexa toolbar
try to install alexa toolbar and see ur rank boosting
