What does a SEO do?

Hey there ,
I've seen many people offering there services and saying "I'l SEO your site for $XXX" .
So , I'd like to ask ,
What all do they do except Link biulding and submitting your sites to SE?
Since Zafar is search engine optimiser , i'd love to ask him and others what is done by them when they are given a job and told to SEO the site?

Like particular search keywords used,your site will come in the first page of results......

They do many things

on page seo - re structure your pages using h1,h2, h3 structures etc. meta tags, better internal linking.

off page SEO

identify competitors, keyword research etc.

Alright, altough I am very new here and have no reps, but here is my view of what an SEO should do:-

1-Keyword Research
2-On-site search engine optimization (properly using <h1><title> and <meta> tags) {Most peoples say meta are not alive anymore,however <Meta description> have a high importance IMO.
3-Of site optimization (PR,link building, and any other possibleways)
4-Keeping an eye on statistic and monitoring and maintaining rank for certain keywords.

I have many more in my mind but I guess these are quite sufficient.

There is something more to add and that is consistent working. It can take several months to SEO a site and there is many more things to do other than lists here in this post.

meta tags optimization is the main issue in seo.

I agree with 1websitedesign. Meta tags are important which is why it surprises me that when people submit a website to one of my many Directories they hardly ever fill in the meta tag and meta description. If they have paid then fair enough, i will do a lot of the work for them. But when they submit to a free one i just delete them. If they can't be bothered then why should i.

I have read this that Search Engine Optimization Expert these days actually do? There are two parts to Search Engine Optimization, the on page modifications and the off page modifications.

On Page Search Engine Optimization:

Off page SEO is just as important as on page SEO. A good SEO expert will help you setup backlinks to boost your Google PageRank and submit the website to directories and social networks on your behalf.

Unfortunately hiring a SEO Expert is risky because its difficult to judge how effectively the service has increased traffic to your webiste. If you understand the proper use of keywords, the title tag, meta tags, file naming, back links and article submission you don’t need to hire a SEO Expert to make the chances for you.

An important thing to remember about Search Engine Optimization is that it’s not a five minute job, but it’s not rocket science either. There aren’t any “secrets” or million dollar tricks to optimizing your site. If you optimize your website and continually post excellent content the search engines will drive traffic for you.
