Dried flowers manifold the décor of some home when they are used in wreaths, swags, vases and potpourris. Dried flower can be purchased from local craft stores but they are quite expensive and secondly these stores provide limited choices.  A wide range of inexpensive dry flowers can be chosen if they are dried at home.

The air-dry method is considered the easiest way to dry flowers. But this method is not used to dry all the varieties of flowers and one has to make some experiments to know what kinds of flowers can do the best with this method. For this method such flowers are required as are about to bloom and whose petals are new. When older flowers are dried, they lose their petals.

These days, microwave serves as multipurpose equipment in homes as it can be used for just about anything as so is for drying flowers. You need to buy silica gel crystals from your local craft store to dry flowers in the microwave. Silica gel crystals are prepared to put them in high heat for several minutes in the microwave that remove all the moisture. Then prepare flowers by cutting them according to size of your microwave safe glass container. Drop few inches of the silica gel into the container and erect flower in the container by putting the stem into the crystals.

The silica gel can also be used to dry flower without putting yourself in the hassle of microwave.  Fill the bottom of a Tupperware container with few inches of silica gel, then place your flowers into the container and put them in the ground with silica gel. You must completely cover the petals with the gel crystals. You will find the flowers dry after 5 to 6 days.

Borax or sand can also be used to dry flowers. Take a box container and pour an inch or two of dry shore sand or sifted borax into its bottom. Now put the flowers into the box with bloom side down position and ground them gently in sand or sifted borax. It is not essential to seal or cover the container but usually the flowers take three to four weeks to dry completely. Use a small paintbrush or makeup brush to remove the excess sand or borax over the dry flowers.

Now after drying these flowers your next attempt would be to preserve them for a long time. There many such sprays available in the market that can help you to preserve these dry flowers for a long time. Matte acrylic art spray and other hairspray can also be used for this purpose. The flowers need time to time sprays avoid fading or falling apart.
