Is gaming an addiction?

Gaming is addiction or not? It’s a long debate and the issue often seems hitting tabloid every now and then.

But according to a specialist from Amsterdam’s Smith & Jones Center, gaming is not an addiction and it must not be treated like that.

Keith Bakker, who is the head of first clinic to work with gamers in Europe, believes that compulsive gaming is a social instead of a psychological problem in the youngsters and kids.

In an interview with the BBC, Baker told that these kids showed some symptoms that were comparable to chemical dependencies and other addictions and they seemed addicted to MMOs.

Nokia to introduce own mobile phone service in Japan

There are some reports from Japan which suggest that Nokia is planning to take a leap into the unknown, as the Finnish company is planning to start its own mobile network in Japan that will offer handsets as well as monthly plans behind them.

Yomiuri Shimbun (a newspaper) says that Nokia is about to start a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service and will use an infrastructure leased from NTT DoCoMo in February next year.

But the report says that the MVNO is not going to compete with existing operators in Japan directly and it will leverage Nokia’s Vertu brand to target the extreme high end of the market.

This new venture will most probably be irrelevant to ordinary Japanese phone users, as the Vertu handsets will be available with the price tag of ¥5 million (£35,000) each. Read the rest of this entry »

Early Christmas present: 3 bringing Sky TV to mobile customers

Well, you may get a lot of Christmas present this (credit-crunchy) time, but 3 has become the first to offer with its announcement to bring Sky TV channels to its mobile customers that will allow them to watch Premier League footie on the fly.

So it means mobile TV channels like Sky News, Sky Sports and CNN will be on your palm alongside the likes of ITV and BBC.

But wait, 3 customers this present is not absolutely free (if it’s really a present) as you can pick up the service for £5 a month and if you don’t want unlimited access, you will to pay £1 a day. Read the rest of this entry »

Weaker demand for PCs: Intel revenues to miss market targets

The weaker global demand for PCs may become the cause to miss market targets for Intel, the world’s biggest computer chip maker.

Due to latest lower consumer spending globally, Intel warns that its revenues for October to December might be 14% down.

Now the company projects Q4 revenue of $9bn, while it was $10.5bn in its previous forecast.

The new figure is much worse than expected, analysts say.

John Dryden of Charter Equity Research says: “It is quite significant, consumers are basically shutting down for the holidays and it’s below what they were expecting.”

Latest mobile browser update from Opera

Opera has just released Opera Mini 4.2, the latest update to its mobile internet browser.

With improved YouTube and a wider range of mobile phones support, the new Opera beta offers a more personalised mobile web experience.

A beefed up Opera Link that allows you to share notes and bookmarks between your mobile and your Pc are some other improvements that have been included.

“Opera’s CEO, Jon von Tetzchner, the CEO of Opera says that: “A true revolution is really going on and it can be easily observed from the number of people who are using Opera Mini worldwide. People want to visit websites with their devices they have today.”

Web addiction: A clinical disorder in China

If you press refresh on your emails every minute or constantly go to your favourite sites to find whether they have updated their content, you may be one among those who are suffering from internet addiction.

Though there is a considerable increase in the number of internet addicts, this psychological disorder has not been given official diagnosis till now.

China says that it is going to officially declare web addiction a disorder, as it’s as compulsive as drinking alcohol or gambling.

The step was taken when one of China’s top legislators said that almost 10% of china’ youth has addicted to the Internet.

Online Xmas shopping may experience a huge rise

People are thinking to (dodge the credit crunch) take advantage of cheaper online prices and this may cause a huge rise in online shopping.

Figures from the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) and Capgemini show that around £13.16billion to be spent online in the final quarter of 2008 and it would be 15 percent higher than the same period last year.

Though it may be a major rise, it would indicate a slow-down on online shopping growth.

It is expected that 8 December (a Monday) is going to be the UK’s most zealous shopping day when an estimated £320million to be spent online.

Almost 42 percent of the shopping will be made outside of usual shopping hours, before shops opening in the morning or after 6pm.
