Web addiction: A clinical disorder in China

If you press refresh on your emails every minute or constantly go to your favourite sites to find whether they have updated their content, you may be one among those who are suffering from internet addiction.

Though there is a considerable increase in the number of internet addicts, this psychological disorder has not been given official diagnosis till now.

China says that it is going to officially declare web addiction a disorder, as it’s as compulsive as drinking alcohol or gambling.

The step was taken when one of China’s top legislators said that almost 10% of china’ youth has addicted to the Internet.

In UK, 3 out of 4 Web searches are conducted via Google

According to ComScore’s recent internet usage figures, three out of every four internet searches in the UK are conducted by using Google’s search engines.

These astounding figures show 0.5 percent increase that propelled Google over the mark of 75 per cent and also show the wide gap between Google and second place eBay that covers 5.5 per cent market share.

Yahoo’s search engine has 4.3 percent and Microsoft’s search engine has 3.4 per cent market share. However, on last month’s figures Microsoft was slightly up and Yahoo was slightly down. On the other hand, AOL search has surpassed Facebook and the acquisition of Facebook’s rival Bebo is the basic factor behind it.

Yahoo’s Chief Executive succeeds to win the support of 85% investors

At Yahoo’s annual meeting in California, Chief executive Jerry Yang succeeded to win the support of 85% investors.

However, some investors criticized the firm on not to agreeing a $47.5bn buyout offer from Microsoft.

During the meeting, a shareholder Eric Jackson of Ironfire Capital asked Chairman Roy Bostock to step down from the post.

“Bostock must do an honorable thing and resign from the board,” stated Eric Jackson, an investor from Ironfire Capital.

Eric also accused that Bostock overplaying his hand with Microsoft.

Yahoo CEO still optimistic despite unenthusiastic 2Q

Despite of 20 percent down in company’s stock price during his 13-month reign, Yahoo’s CEO is still optimistic as his message to his frustrated shareholders suggests that things aren’t bad as they have been depicted.

“We are doing just fine in a tough environment and tough economy” Yang stated in an interview with The Associated Press. “We are hopeful for a lot of good things ahead.”
However, if Yahoo’s 2Q results are examined, they don’t provide any reason for enthusiasm.

But still these results aren’t as alarming as many investors were expecting after Yahoo’s months long sparring with Microsoft Corp.

“Keep the Internet free of broadband providers’ interference” Groups urge FCC

To make the Internet free of broadband providers’ interference, the U.S. Federal Communication is considering taking some steps against them.  Many witnesses told The FCC about interferences like tracking of Web habits, subscribers and slowing down of peer-to-peer traffic.

According to Marge Krueger who is administrator of the Communication Workers of America, “It is essential for FCC to take steps against such broadband providers that don’t allow access even to some legal Internet applications and they also don’t issue any notice to their subscribers in this connection.”

McCain desires to become a Web-savvy citizen

Kathryn Robinson can help him best if Sen. John McCain really wants to become a Web-savvy citizen. Robinson is of 106 and almost 35 years older than McCain. She lives in Barclay Friends, West Chester Pa and she started using Internet when she was of 98.She told in an e-mail message that she started to learn Internet as she wanted to e-mail her family.

There was much fuss on different Blogs when McCain admitted that he was an illiterate about the Internet and had to rely on his wife to get assistance for the Internet.

No more .coms, ICANN opens up voting for new domain names

To start the internet naming scheme for further choices, ICANN will kick off voting later this week.

ICANN is a none-profit organization that is attributed to control the Internet’s naming scheme. At its meeting in Paris on Thursday, ICANN will vote on an offer that lets companies to buy new top-level domains that can end at almost anything they choose. Now instead of getting restricted to last letters of their web sites like .com, .co.uk or .org, the companies will get an opportunity to have their company name at the end of their URL. Now soon you would find sites like .intel or .ebay instead of .com similarly, different cities will get the opportunity to name their Web sites like .newyork etc.

Yahoo deems Google a more desirable partner than Microsoft

Google has been defended as a more desirable partner than Microsoft Corp. by the Internet pioneer Yahoo Inc.

Yahoo again confirmed about its planned advertising joint venture with Google and it targeted those reports that were narrating about a new deal with Microsoft. The report was based on information from anonymous sources and it emerged even Yahoo’s repetitive rejection of the Microsoft buyout bid that followed a war of words for almost five months.

In this Yahoo’s letter the best option has been declared to work with Google but the chances of the new deal with Microsoft have not been completely ruled out.
