Google just announced a competition where $10 million dollars has been put out for grabs by the best teams who can develop great mobile applications for the Android platform, possibly for the preparation of the highly anticipated GooglePhone, which Google has kept under wraps for a long time. There are no strings attached and everything to gain as Google has stated on the official page at http://code.google.com/android/adc.html.
50 of the “most promising entries”, as quoted from the official page, will receive $25,000 to further develop the software and a chance to advance even further to the $275,000 and $100,000 awards. This is especially lucrative for companies or passionate individuals that may not know where to start and it is a great opportunity to get them exposed and known in the development world. The panel of judges may prove to be tough as Google’s reputation for their strict standards of quality will make sure that only the best get through.
“We’ve built some interesting applications for Android but the best applications are not here yet and that’s because they’re going to be written by developers,” said Sergey Brin, the famous Co-founder and President, Technology, Google. “We’d like to reward these developers and recognize them as much as possible.”
This competition was announced by the Open Handset Alliance, a group of industry leaders in the technology and mobile world who are pushing to bring the mobile phones to a new level and provide the consumers with a better overall experience.
The Android SDK is available complete with documentation, sample projects, development tools, emulator and libraries for anyone interested in creating new and innovative programs for this new platform. Since they are promoting the use of the Android SDK, entries that make the best and most use of the functions that it can provide will have an advantage when it comes to the judging.
The great thing about this competition is that the original developers will get to keep their IP right to the project, meaning they still have full ownership and can do anything they want with it. It seems that this is definitely not a source of revenue, but part of a long term plan to bring more to the mobile world.
