If you know anything about the internet, you know that Google has become a super power over the past couple of years. Not only do they dominate the online search world, but the same thing holds true of online advertising. Of course, a company like this never slows down. Next in line: a joint venture with Cleveland Clinic which will bring Google to the forefront of the electronic health records industry.
Just last week, the two companies announced that they have joined together for a PHR pilot program that will be tested be a small group of patients at Cleveland Clinic who have been using another system.
One of the main goals of the pilot program is to test the exchange of patient data including information on illnesses, allergies, and prescriptions among other details. The data will be exchanged between a secure Google Profile and the Clinic.
Although Google is sure to make waves with this decision, they are not the first company to dabble in this area. Microsoft has done the same with their HealthVault initiative. With that being said, Microsoft has not had nearly as much success as they would have liked.
Although this is a good plan on paper, Google has a way to go before they turn successful in this industry. When it comes down to it, there are quite a few barriers that need to be overcome. For instance, will patients agree to this type of system? Do they want their personal and health data going to Google? Do they trust that the company will not abuse the information that they receive? These are all questions that must be answered before the company can get serious about success in this industry.
There is no denying that Google is up against quite a few barriers. While there partnership with Cleveland Clinic is a good start, there are more issues that will need resolved as the program continues. With that being said, both Google and Cleveland Clinic are good at what they do. If any two firms are able to make headway in this area, it is these two.

This is really amazing on how google is spreading its wings across all the field and this news of google’s involvement in medical record proves the same. What next? I feel that google is going to be an undisputed king of the net soon and undisputed leader in all fields.

Google is the leader of the internet. The best thing about them is that they keep innovating themselves. Regarding this medical record tie up with Cleveland Hosp. its a good idea. All my best wishes to them, but I hope that they take care of the ethical and privacy part of the whole deal though I am sure there won’t be problems on that front.
