If you’re looking to become a healthcare practice manager, or even to start up your own practice, there are some things you need. While you certainly need the right education, there are some skills that you also require If you want to be successful and great.

Leadership and management skills are essential to running a practice. You’ll need to be able to manage and organize people, as well as files and records, and motivate those around you to be the best that they can be.


Organization is a key skill when it comes to running a practice. Whether big or small, you’re going to be busy. You’ll need to organize not only your own time, but that of those around you. The ability to make, and stick to a plan is going to be essential. You’ll also need to organize patients, appointments, records and files, and have the skills to set up new systems. Often, your to do list will be huge, you need to be able to quickly prioritize and meet deadlines without fail. There will also be some training and development needs, it will be your job to instruct other staff, teach them new protocols and run training sessions.


Working within a healthcare practice means you need to be trustworthy, kind, understanding and empathetic. You need to be able to understand your patient’s needs, and be someone people can talk to and confide in. You also need to be good at coping with stressful situations and defusing the stress of those you work with. On top of all this, you need to be able to be firm when its required. Sometimes you may have to deal with violent or aggressive behavior.


Another skill you’ll need is the ability to be flexible. When it comes to practice management, no two days will be the same. You need to be ready to cope with anything. You also need to be flexible to changes within the healthcare industry in general. If new legislation and laws are introduced, you need to be able to meet them with immediate effect.

On top of this, you’ll need a desire to learn and to make positive change to the system. The first step to becoming a great manager is to know your own job inside and out, only then can you help others do theirs. You should also know the staff around you, understand their strengths and weaknesses and know how to always get the best out of them.

Being a practice manager offers you a lot of flexibility when it comes to hours, so is a great option for those who want or have a family. Also, with the healthcare industry set to continue to grow, there will be no shortage of job options moving forward.
