How To Get Into Tech As A College Grad

The tech industry offers plenty of employment opportunities for recent college graduates. You are more likely to be successful in landing your first job if you have a solid job search plan.

How do you decide where you should apply? What should your research on prospective employer’s entail? How do you prepare for interviews so you stand out from other candidates?

Getting into the tech as a college grad shouldn’t be daunting, and here are some helpful tips as you search for a job

1. Know What You Want

Even before you can start sending out applications, do some introspection about the kind of workplace environment and culture that you would like to be a part of your day. Are you looking to work in a small tech company, or an industry giant?

Once you have narrowed down what you want, do your research and shortlist companies that can offer the same. This will be your shortlist of dream employers.

2. Hone Your Skills To Get Into Tech As A College Grad

Looking through the job requirements and job descriptions posted for the role you would like to fit, are you confident you would be a good fit for the job? Do you have what it takes to be a suitable candidate for the job such as potential employers would readily invite you for interviews and hire you?

Learning is meant to be a continual process, and you shouldn’t be too content with just your college education. Find short courses that will reinforce what you may already know, and teach you what you do not know.

For veterans, pay for your education. In the end, any extra knowledge, skill or certification you have will set you apart from the other candidates and improve your chances of getting hired.

3. Monitor Job Boards

Looking through the many jobs posted daily on various job boards can be quite exhausting. Set up alerts with specific keywords related to the roles in the tech industry you would like to fill. It will be that much easier to monitor the postings on the job board when you narrow things down with specific criteria. Select the entry-level experience, and enter your preferred locations, among other criteria.

4. Reach Out Within Your Networks

Even as you keep your eye on the job boards, tap into your networks. Look at relevant contacts and connections within LinkedIn and send personalized emails. Keep the email short, and professional, highlight your education and experiences and some of the job titles you may be interested in. Be sure to attach your well-drafted resume and express your gratitude for the support.

These connections could be just about anyone working in the company that you’d like to join. Yes, your connection who works in the finance department at your dream company may forward your resume to the HR manager and get you that interview.

5. Go After the Scouts To Get Into Tech As A College Grad

Zero in on the recruiters and hiring managers at the companies where you would like to work. Do your research, find out who these are, get their contact information and reach out directly. If the tech company has a page on LinkedIn, you will more than likely find its employees, and their roles in the company listed, which should make your research work easier.

Reaching out directly to recruiters as a follow-up after applying for an advertised job will make you stand. Not many will do it, so your out-of-the-box strategy will certainly leave an impression.

That said, you should not hesitate to reach out even if the company doesn’t have any current openings. Send an email, highlight what value you bring to the job, and let the recruiter know you would appreciate being considered should an opening come up.

You can go ahead and ask to meet for a cup of coffee and a chance to discuss a few ideas on how you can be a better fit for a role within the company. Even if you don’t get a job out of it, you will do well to come out with a mentor to guide you with the rest of your job search journey.

6. Stand Out At Interviews

Between job boards, and leveraging your networks and contacts within your dream employer companies, it shouldn’t be long before you get invited to a few interviews. Prepare way by learning all there is to the company and the role for which you are applying.

Be articulate about what makes you an asset and what you can do for the company in that role. For the technical questions, it is perfectly ok to say you don’t know, instead of rumbling on and on all the way to a dead end. Assure the panel of your willingness to learn.

With the right attitude and, of course, the skills to match, you can get into any of many employment opportunities within the tech field right after graduating college.
