Moving to a new city can be a major adjustment for children. They may be leaving behind friends, familiar routines, favorite places, and a school environment they know well. Major life changes can affect how children feel and behave, particularly when several changes happen at the same time, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Starting at a private school at the same time can add another layer of uncertainty. With preparation, patience, and plenty of reassurance, parents can help their children feel comfortable and confident in their new surroundings.

Private schools are a common educational choice for families across the country. According to CAPE, private schools account for 25% of the nation’s schools and enroll 10 percent of all PK-12 students. In this article, we’ll explore practical ways to help your child adjust to a new city and private school.

Give Your Child Time to Adjust

It is important to remember that adjustment does not happen overnight. Even if your child seems excited about the move, they may experience homesickness or frustration once everything becomes unfamiliar. Give them time to process their emotions without expecting them to immediately love their new surroundings.

Maintain familiar routines whenever possible. Keeping regular mealtimes, bedtime routines, hobbies, and family traditions can provide a sense of stability while everything else is changing. The CDC notes that consistent routines can help children feel safe and know what to expect, which can be particularly helpful when a child is adjusting to major changes at home or school.

Explore the New City Together

One of the best ways to help your child become comfortable is to explore the new city as a family. Visiting unfamiliar places together can also be easier when parents understand how to make outings more comfortable and manageable for children, particularly after a major transition such as moving. Many of the same practical considerations involved in traveling with young children can also help families plan enjoyable trips and activities around their new community.

For families moving to a growing metropolitan area, there may be plenty of new places to discover. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of the Columbus metro area grew by more than 21,000 to 2,242,028 in 2025. Exploring the community together can help your child feel like they are becoming part of something new rather than simply leaving something familiar behind.

Prepare for the New School

Before your child’s first day, learn as much as possible about the private school they will be attending. Review the daily schedule, dress code, transportation arrangements, extracurricular opportunities, and other important details. Preparing for these changes is also an important part of thoughtful child education planning, particularly when a family is adjusting to a new school environment.

If possible, visit the school before classes begin. Walk through the building, locate the classroom, and introduce your child to teachers or staff members.

Help Them Build New Friendships

Making friends is often one of the biggest concerns for children moving to a new school. Encourage your child to participate in activities that interest them, such as sports, clubs, music, or other extracurricular programs. Shared interests can make it easier to start conversations and form connections.

Consider arranging a casual playdate or activity with a classmate if the opportunity arises. Even one new friendship can make a new school feel much more welcoming.

Make Unpacking a Family Activity

Moving can feel overwhelming when boxes remain everywhere. Instead of making unpacking an entirely adult task, let your child help organize their room and choose where their belongings should go.

The moving and storage industry also continues to evolve. According to Business Research Insights, the portable storage container market is estimated to grow by 4.1% by 2028. Whether your family uses portable storage or another moving solution, creating a comfortable personal space can help your child feel settled sooner.

Stay Patient and Positive

Most importantly, give your child plenty of reassurance throughout the transition. Celebrate small victories, such as making a new friend, finding a favorite place in town, or having a positive day at school. Avoid dismissing feelings of sadness or nervousness. Instead, acknowledge them while reminding your child that adjustment takes time.

With consistent support and encouragement, a new city and private school can eventually become a place where your child feels comfortable, connected, and excited to grow.
